Naples Sunset Chapter of the American Wine Society

The American Wine Society was founded almost 50 years ago as a "non-profit, educational, consumer-oriented organization for those interested in learning more about all aspects of wine".

Recently, a number of  fellow oenophiles decided to form the first Naples chapter of the American Wine Society, the Sunset Chapter. Aptly named, as this area is well known for it's beautiful sunsets.

They have a small and very diverse membership. As far as small goes, this maximizes their educational experience. And, if for no other reason, there are approximately seventeen 1 and 1/2 oz. pours (i.e, 17*45 ml. =  765 ml.) in a bottle of wine. This, not coincidentally, is about what the membership is limited to now (17). Regarding diversity, they are made up of a cast of characters that includes a Master Sommelier which in my book is a real plus for a wine group.

They meet the first Friday of every month and these are events not to be missed. For the upcoming meeting, it will be pinot night. Without boring you with vintners and years, they will learn more about pinot gris, pinot blanc, pinot grigio, pinotage and their progenitor grape, pinot noir. More on this in a later post.

When you join the American Wine Society, they send you a number of introductory materials including a pocket vintage chart. It takes a bit to figure it out. Using this chart, I was introduced to some very nice bottles of White Bordeaux. Without this guide I would have been unaware of them which according to the chart, were at the top of their game in 2009. The chart was spot on.

According to the chart 2012 will be a very good year for most any wine from North America, and I cannot wait to try some of them.
